Scout leader receives award from US captain

A HIGH ranking American captain for the US Navy presented a special award to a scout leader from Flackwell Heath on Sunday.

After the remembrance service Captain David Dittmer presented Fred Gibson, 57, from Heath Lane, with an award for his continued commitment to international relations.

Mr Gibson, who is assistant scout leader for Flackwell Heath, linked his group with the Boy Scouts of America based in the UK.

He arranged activities between the two groups and organised joint camps.

The award came as a surprise for Mr Gibson. He said: “I wasn't ready for it at all. I didn't know anything about it.

“I am just keeping the scout law to develop worldwide friendship.”

He added that it has been a cultural learning experience for scouts on both sides who have learnt about the different way of doing things.

His certificate said that the ambassador of the USA to the court of St James' acknowledged the outstanding efforts of Mr Gibson in furthering cordial community relations in the UK which strengthened the British and American alliance.
